Do we need to "sell all"?
If you think Jesus was talking to you when He said all the things He said while He was on earth, think again. Take "selling all you have", as an example. Jesus told the rich man this, but that was not an isolated situation. He also told the "little flock" (All believing Jews of Israel, which were few) in Luke 12 to sell all they had.
Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Luke 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
The 12 also did the same:
Mark 10:28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.
This selling of all also continued in the book of Acts as Peter continues to preach the gospel of the kingdom that Jesus preached while He was on earth.
Acts 2:45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
Acts 4:32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
Acts 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
So we have to ask the question:
Why under Jesus and the 12's ministry was baptism, repentance, selling all and keeping the law, requirements for the Israel/Jews to be saved?
If we don't rightly divide we will never get the right answer. When we rightly divide the answer is simple: Jesus wasn't talking to us the body of Christ for these to be our requirements to be saved. Jesus gave the apostle Paul different instructions (a different gospel) for us today. Those things were required b/c the "kingdom was at hand". Israel was to be a kingdom of priests. A priest needed to be cleansed before entering the priesthood. The nation had to be cleansed to go into the kingdom. That is why Jesus healed EVERYONE and casted out devils. He was cleansing Israel and being true to the prophecies about Himself in what the Messiah would do in preparing Israel to enter into their earthly kingdom that was promised since Gen. 12.
They were all selling what they had because they were to by faith, trust God for their provisions:
Matt 6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
Matt 6:32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
This kingdom gospel is not for us today. We are saved by the gospel of the grace of God.
