WHY THE 4 GOSPEL BOOKS?
The 4 gospels were written in a way to fulfill prophecy. It was prophesied how the Christ would be portrayed.
1) Matthew emphasizes Christ as King a) Branch of David (Jer. 23:5) b) Behold thy King (Zech. 9:9)
King - Matthew - Jer 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
2) Mark emphasizes Christ as the Servant a) my servant the BRANCH (Zech. 3:8) b) Behold..my servant (Zech. 3:8)
Servant - Mark - Zech 3:8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.
3) Luke emphasizes Christ as the Son of Man a) the man whose name is the BRANCH (Zech. 6:12) b) Behold the man (Zech. 6:12-13)
Man - Luke - Zech 6:12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:
4) John emphasizes Christ as the Son of God a) the branch of the LORD (Isa. 4:2) b) Behold your God (Isa. 40:9)
God - John - Isa 40:9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
